We salute our veterans and thank them and our active members of the armed services for their service to our country. The stresses of their service put them at risk for developing substance use disorders (SUD), including alcohol and drug addiction. We’re here to help raise awareness and offer our veterans substance use treatment that works.
About 11% of veterans are diagnosed with substance use disorders, but the numbers are higher because so many veterans do not get the substance use treatment they need. Alcohol use, particularly binge drinking, is one of the more common substance use issues that veterans deal with. Almost three quarters of veterans with SUD struggle with alcohol use. Methamphetamine and cocaine use among veterans has increased.
PTSD, or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and SUD go hand in hand. Nearly a third of veterans seeking treatment for SUD also have PTSD. The most effective treatments for SUD include relapse prevention, cognitive behavioral therapy and contingency mangagement. All are part of Affect’s online substance use treatment program that is delivered through its app.
Veterans and Contingency Management Addiction Treatment
The Veteran’s Administration (VA) was an early adopter of Contingency Management and provided results and research showing how effective it is to treat SUDs. Experts in addiction medicine and behavioral science designed Affect’s program using the VA’s learnings and other research in neuroscience to achieve results in the top 1%, ranking among the best of the best addiction treatment programs.
Contingency management is a system of rewards for doing tasks and achievements in someone’s journey to lasting recovery from alcohol and drug addiction. SUDs are chronic medical conditions. Substances like alcohol and drugs change the brain’s chemistry and hijack its rewards system. Contingency management’s rewards provide natural dopamine, the chemical that contributes to happy feelings and motivates people to form habits. Harmful habits are replaced with new, healthy ones. Affect developed the first treatment program in an app that uses financial rewards to successfully motivate people to quit drinking and stop using drugs for good.

There’s help for Veterans who need substance use treatment
Health insurance covers substance use treatment
A significant portion of veterans have commercial health insurance in addition to VA health care. A study from 2010-2021 found that more than 75% of veterans enrolled in VA health coverage had another source of health insurance. Affect accepts many employer and marketplace insurance plans, as well as Medicaid and Medicare, in states where we are licensed to provide substance use treatment for alcohol and drugs.
Does Tricare cover addiction treatment? Does Affect accept Tricare?
Tricare insurance is a healthcare program that offers addiction treatment coverage for military service members, including National Guard and Reserve members, and their families. Tricare covers management of withdrawl symptoms while people get substance use treatment. Affect accepts Tricare in Texas and Ohio, where opioid and intensive outpatient treatment is available.
Is substance use treatment private and confidential?
Concerns over privacy are a major reason why people don’t get the professional help they need for alcohol and drug abuse. There is no need to worry. Addiction treatment is covered under HIPAA privacy laws. No one can share your information without approval. Even when people use their employer’s insurance plans to get treatment, no one will ever be informed.
Affect’s program is built to be convenient and this help our members keep their treatment even more private. They never have to go to a clinic since treatment comes right to them on their phone. They just close the door and log in. We never sell or share any data from using the app or our website. Our members privacy is a top priority. You’re always safe and secure with us.
